The Global Goals

Is it possible to abolish extreme poverty, to reduce inequalities and injustices, to promote peace and justice, and to solve the climate crisis? 193 of the UN member states say YES – if we work for it together. 17 global goals summarize what the countries have committed to do.

On 25 September 2015, Agenda 2030 was adopted, a universal agenda for how countries should work for sustainable development in the coming years. In the agenda there are 17 Global Goals that include all three dimensions of sustainability – social, economic and environmental. Each goal has a series of milestones and a series of indicators that make it possible to measure progress.

In Sweden, all ministers in the government have responsibility for the implementation of the Global Goals, and the government has appointed an Agenda 2030 delegation to draw up a national action plan.

But for the Global Goals to become a reality, all parts of society – organizations, businesses, the public sector, researchers and individuals – must be involved. Here, IM and other civil society organizations play an important role, both through their respective activities and by monitoring those in power so that they fulfill their commitments.

IM has chosen to focus on five of the Global Goals where we believe that, through our operations, we have the greatest opportunity to contribute:

Goal 1 – No poverty

Goal 5 – Equality

Goal 10 – Reduced inequality

Goal 16 – Peaceful and inclusive societies

Goal 17 – Implementation and global partnership
