Actions on Environment Day in Nepal
IM supported partners in Nepal who joined people around the world to mark the World Environment Day on June 5. This year the World Environment Day is being marked with the theme Only One Earth. It calls for collective, transformative action on a global scale to celebrate, protect and restore our planet.
Our partner SWAN celebrated with a tree planting activity in the Gadhawa Rural Municipality of Dang district with the women from the villages. Around 300 trees were planted by the volunteers.
Our partner Indreni Rural Development Centre that is currently implementing a pond rehabilitation project to create resilient livelihoods for Tharu indigenous community, spent the day cleaning up the pond. And they had conversations on the importance of protecting nature and stopping pollution. Such community-led clean ups and tree planting initiatives are important, but we know that the profit-obsessed economic system driving the planetary collapse cannot be changed without loud action from the grassroots. This is why IM supported our partner Youth Advocacy Nepal to co-organise a youth demonstration against the climate crisis. The turnout was fantastic with several young men and women showing up on the street with placards and slogans demanding to save the #OnlyOneEarth we have. The protest was covered in Nepal media.
